Module #5

Bubbl.us is a online platform that I already use in the classroom. The children are very familiar with the program. What I learnt about exploring the new updated version is the collaboration button. It is in keeping with the concept of google docs where more people can collaborate on a brainstorm. “Visual communication is a process of sending and receiving messages using images. Visual literacy can be defined as the ‘ability to construct meaning from visual images.’ (Giorgis, Johnson, Bonomo, Colbert, & al, 1999: 146) To make meaning from images, the ‘reader’ uses the critical skills of exploration, critique, and reflection." ~ The Visual Literacy White Paper, Dr. Anne Bamford, Art and Design University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. Both of these quotes from the Web 2.0 page stood out to me. It is so important to teach the skills needed for understanding ‘visual literacies’. We put so much effort into developing literacy skills such as reading, writing, speaking and listening, but do we teach effectively what to do when these 4 literacies combine in ‘visual literacies’.
